2nd September - The Big Kick
Off
The
2007-08 season finally got under way with mixed results for Southbank.
In
Division 1 West Southbank travelled to Mapledurham Cavaliers and came away
impressive 4-1 victors with goals from Gavin Hill, Bruce Bellman and a
superb brace from midfielder Jason Wagner (click
here for a full match report).
The well deserved win, which could probably have been by a wider margin had
it not been for some wayward finishing, puts Southbank in second place
behind Barton Rovers in the early league table. Barton managed to see
off Riverside 6-1 to head the table whilst the elsewhere Abbey Rangers Res
lost 3-2 to Bishopswood Sports, Henley Town and Goring drew 1 a-piece and
Kidmore saw off Trentonians 2-1.
Southbank Res didn't as fruitful a start to the season. Despite
putting in a decent performance Scouse's troops came away from Coley on the
wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline (click here
for more details). The ever green Andy Persaud started the season
where he left off by opening the scoring with a 25 yard effort but despite a
solid display from returning goalkeeper Ray Parris Caversham Park took all 3
points.
The
other three fixtures saw Purely Reserves and Mapledurham Cavaliers play out
a rare 0-0 draw, Purely Social beat Villa Park 3-2 and FC Ole had the edge
over Misfits Reserves to win 3-2. It's a long season ahead and there
is plenty of time for the Reserves to bounce back from this early setback.
