11th October 2009 -  Early Form Encouraging

Southbank's journey into the unknown for season 09-10 has largely been encouraging, at least on the pitch!

Hightowers first team had a difficult start to life in the Senior division with games against two of the pre-season favourites (Whitley Tavern and Wrightchoice) and eventual early pace setters Abbey Rangers.  Despite a disappointing result in their opening game against Abbey (a 4-1 reverse) they bounced back with excellent performances against Wrightchoice (a very credible 0-0) and Tavern (a 3-2 loss that could easily have been a 3-3 draw had it not been for a last minute equaliser being wrongly ruled out for offside!).  Further disappointment followed however, with defeats against Associated Asphalt and Woodley Saints, but despite these knock backs a convincing 5-1 win over established Senior Division Richfield Rovers proves they have the ability to win games at the new level.

Off the pitch Hightower has had to deal with a mini defensive crisis with Will Graham breaking a foot and Danny Fitzpatrick calling it a day as top division football twice in the weekend was taking it's toll.  On a more positive note Hightower has added Senior Division winning experience in goalkeeper Stephen Marshall and further strengthened his attacking options with the signing of Johnny Adey.

Meanwhile, Southbank Reserves have continued in Division 2 where they left off in Division 3, with 5 wins from their opening 6 games.  As with last season this wins have been achieved the hard way and Budda's side have already played 3 of the top four teams resulting in excellent wins against Bethel United and Celtic Rangers and a narrow defeat to fellow Coley Park outfit Kennet Vale.

Like the first team the Reserves have seen a number of players drop out of the squad with both MacArthur borthers (Ali and Andy) moving on and club stalwart Andy Persaud hanging up his boots.  Coming in Budda has managed to secure the services of ex-Alfreds Head midfielder Ryan Tipper as well as centre forward John Finnieston to strengthen the squad.
