25th Jan 2003 - A Season Update

As the season has stuttered over the last few months this is just a quick reminder to let you know where we stand this year.

The first team have obviously been struggling and are yet to win their first game.  Having played 8 league games they've amassed a total of 5 points from 3 draws and 5 defeats.  Those of you that passed GCSE maths (or O'levels Dave and Persaud!) might notice that it should be 3 points.  Well thankfully the league awarded us with a win against Dee Road Rangers Res as they fielded an ineligible player.  With 12 league games left it seems as though there is a bit of a relegation fight on.  Thankfully for the first team, County Arms, Purley Res and Pangbourne currently have a very similar record and it is looking like 2 from these 4 will finish in the relegation places.  With 4 games to play against these sides it is all to play for in the coming months.

The Reserves have faired somewhat better despite the disruption to their season caused by the never ending cancellation of the Autocare cup game.  With 11 points from 9 games they are now sitting pretty in 6th place.  With the recent additions to the squad and confidence high a top 4 finish well within their grasp.  The reserves are also still in the league cup and have a great opportunity to progress to the latter stages.

As I have said earlier, the season has suffered at the hands of the weather this year.  Although some sides have managed to have played a few more games than us we are by no means falling behind the majority of teams.  With both teams having a minimum of 12 games left to play it is looking inevitable that either double headers of midweek fixtures will come in to play in order to complete the season by May 4th.  This leaves us with 15 Sundays left to squeeze in the remaining games.  Fingers crossed for some better weather.

Finally it is looking more and more likely that we can finally field two decent sides following the recent additions to squad.  Although we've struggled to get two decent squads this season we're by no means the only club to have experienced these problems and in many ways we're now well set for the 2003.  If we all pull together and work as a team hopefully we can make the second half of the season a bit more successful than the first
