28th May 2004 - Holton Secures Southbank Trophy 2004

First Team Player/Manager and Southbank Club Secretary Mark Holton, burnt up the back 9 at Theale Golf Centre to storm home and win the Southbank Trophy for the first time with a convincing 41 points.  His inward 47 (worth 24 points alone) was more than enough to shake of the challenge from Budda (35 pts) and Jim (34) as another successfully Southbank season was drawn to a close.

As the assembled masses arrived at Theale an expectant buzz surrounded the drawing of the playing order.  With another good turnout including past and present players it was the keepers union of Harvey and Jim who pulled the short straw of playing with Steve Brown.  Meanwhile, Hightower tried in vain to contain his first tee nerves as an entertaining day teed off surprisingly on time.

Despite a few concerns over the allocated handicaps it was a very competitive first 9 holes.  Just sneaking it at "half-time" was Budda with 19 points, closely followed by Holton and Jim on 17 points with Towner, Woody, Persaud and Malc all still in touch and trailing by just a few points.  Malc and Danny's group was soon reduced when a heated exchange saw Tony walk off the course in protest at having to play within the rules!  This must've destroyed Danny's game as his second nine produced a measly 8 points compared to Malc's 18!

As the groups came home it was a late charge by Holton that blew the rest away.  Scoring at least a net par (2 points) on every back 9 hole Holton built an unassailable lead with a net eagle at the 17th and a par on the last to finish with 41 points.  Even Jim's 8 points over the last 3 holes wasn't enough to reign him in.

The Nearest the Pin competition was won by Dave Rolfe, one of only 3 players to hit the 6th green while golf new boy Danny Fitzpatrick creamed a drive down the 14th to take home the Longest Drive award.

The final scores were:

Holton 41 pts (104)

Congratulations to Holton for winning, breaking 50 for 9 holes for the first time ever (apparently!!!!), and for receiving the most phone calls in 18 holes possible!

See you all next year!
