A heavily depleted Southbank had a miserable day as error
after error were penalised by a Caversham Albion side who took great
pleasure in the flattering scoreline.
Despite Southbank debuts for Lee Didcock, Mark
Broomfield, Andrew Hyslop and substitute Seamus Smith the Southbank
squad was stretch to the limits with no less than 6 players missing
(Kemp, Bradbury, Brown, Towner, Thurgood, Price, Rodgers and
Fitzpatrick) from recent weeks. This produced a disjointed
performance that was littered with defensive mistakes and misplaced
passes.
The game seemed all but dead as last weeks man of the
match James Spokes gifted Albion the first goal when he dropped a
soft shot into the path of the Albion forward after 5 minutes.
A second was added when a cross from the Albion left picked out the
same forward to beat Bryce Bellman in the air and loop a header over
Spokes who got tried to get to the cross but couldn't get
there. A 3-0 lead soon followed as another cross from the left
back looped into the top corner for fluke third.
Southbank battled back through Ricky Gales first of the
day and two further goalkeeping errors at the other end. A
Gale free kick from the right went in off the keepers chest at the
near post before Lee Didcock capped a good performance on his debut
by firing the equaliser past a well out of position goalkeeper
following a ball over the top of a very static Albion
defence.
A fourth Albion goal before half time should have served
as a warning for Southbank as an Albion goal fest followed the half
time break.
With Albion always a threat from set pieces Southbank
struggled to defend as a team and Spokes was left picking the ball
out of the net a further 6 times during a half that everyone will be
looking to forget in a hurry.
