Return to Winning
Ways
Southbank returned to
winning ways with a 5-1 victory over Black Boy
on Sunday at Coley Park. After several weeks off
due to the bad weather the players welcomed the
opportunity for a run out, although the pitch
was a little frozen at kick off and did put some
doubt in the mind of the referee.
Despite missing a number of
key players including Ollie, Mig, Gale, Luke and
Raph the Bank were able to field a strong team
with plenty of attacking options. These
attacking options paid dividends early on, the
Bank set about their opponents down the flanks
and using the pace which is becoming a trade
mark of this year’s team. With Donal and Jason
occupying the central midfield berths, Tully,
Woodrow, Benji and Archie were able to exploit
the space provided by the Black Boy to good
effect. Charlie Cook also made his first team
debut in goal and produced an assured display
with plenty of communication and good handling
when called into action.
It didn’t take long for the
opening goal to come, a number of raids had
failed to deliver the goal but then a simple
through ball enabled Benji to race on and slot
past the keeper to provide a perfect start for
the bank.
The pitch was providing a
challenge as the weather of the past weeks had
provided a difficult surface for both teams to
get the ball down and pass. This is probably the
only defence for Hightower who was slow to react
to a simple ball over the top and ended up in a
one on one race with the Black Boy striker. The
end result both players ended up on the floor,
30 yards from goal. Hightower was lucky to stay
on the pitch as the referee took leniency and
only produced a yellow when a red card may have
been more appropriate.
Apart from this the Bank
continued to pour forward and three other goals
came in the first half, Benji profiting from a
mistake by their keeper to register his second,
Archie opening his account for the year and
Donal lobbing home from 25 yards to give the
Bank a commanding lead. The Bank was even able
to hit the crossbar through Wayne Tully’s shot
and allow Archie the opportunity to produce a
Ronny Rosenthal moment.
Still the Bank came into
the half-time break happy with the 45 minutes
work and ready to relax and play football.
However the second half was a rather dull affair
as the pitch and the reality that the game was
dead and buried inevitably lead to a
non-eventful half. There were two goals in this
half mind, the first a consolation for the Black
Boy after the hour, a simple ball over the top,
again the defence a little slow to read the ball
and the striker nipping in and finishing from an
acute angle off the cross bar.
However just as they thought there was a way
back, the Bank stepped up and a ball found
itself to Jason who drilled home from the edge
of the area to finish the game as a contest.
A number of substitutions
followed, as Hightower made full use of his
resources and a number of chances came and went,
the best two falling to Tully making the Black
Boy keeper produce an exceptional save and
Towner, rolling back the years as a second half
sub blasting over when well placed to open his
account for the season in the 1st
team.
Still no more goals came
and the game petered out. However, the Bank had
done their job, recording a victory; something a
distant memory since the autumn and setting
themselves up for the visit of Theale next week,
their last game of 2006.
