Washout
Southbank returned to Scours Lane on Sunday,
this time to face Riverside in what had become a
mid-table clash. With both teams now in
mid-table security, the only thing to play for
was really pride and of course the 3 points.
With a
number of players missing including, Gale,
Bradbury, Archie, Fletcher and Hill, Hightower
was getting down to the bare bones and only able
to field 12 players which included debuts for
young Raph and first start for Ryan, both recent
signings to the Bank cause. By the time kick-off
arrived, the rain was coming down and clearly
this was going to be a game of two halves, with
a strong wind for both teams to deal with
despite the great pitch surface.
The Bank
lost the toss and had the wind and slope with
them in the first half and attacked Riverside,
countless chances came and went. However, in
what turned out to be a difficult half Southbank
had a 1 nil lead to show for their efforts.
Benji racing onto one of many through balls to
finally poke the ball past the Riverside keeper.
Countless chances came and went for the Bank
from the first minute onwards but they were
unable to despatch them and with the conditions
this was always going to be dangerous.
However
disappointing with the scoring side of the team
was, Hightower was pleased with the new lads,
especially Ryan Derman who despite playing out
of position on the left of midfield more than
impressed and looks to be a good signing.
The
second half started with the roles reversed
Riverside immediately on the attack and
Southbank on the back foot. They seemed to have
weathered the storm when Riverside struck 15
minutes into the second half and equalised. A
Bank attack broke down on the edge of the
Riverside penalty box and with 6 players
committed up the pitch, Riverside broke
forward. The Riverside player ran the length of
the pitch practically with the defence no option
but to retreat to the penalty box, where 20
yards out the striker struck and with the aid of
a slight deflection, shot off the wet surface
and beyond Charlie’s sprawling dive.
This
clearly shook the team and Riverside smelt
blood. However from here Southbank had a number
of chances to bury the game with first Raph on
his debut rounding the keeper and prodding the
ball just wide and then, Donal and Woodrow both
hitting the posts as excellent counter attacks
failed to produce what was deserved.
However,
Southbank do have some spirit and regained the
lead with a header from another excellent cross
by Woodrow, this time Hightower restoring the
lead for the team.
Chances
came and went and to be fair the Bank tired,
again with only 12 players to choose from
options for changes were limited. Mitra replaced
Raph and Jason, with sore ribs had to continue.
Riverside then equalised with what appeared to
clearly have been offside position, the
Riverside player poking home from 5 yards out,
Hightower was livid.
From
here Riverside were on the ascendancy and pushed
the Bank without creating any clear
opportunities, the rain continuing to come down
and the slight slope now appearing to be a giant
hill hung on for a point.
In
reflection the Bank dug in well to hang in for a
draw, although in the end this was really a
missed opportunity. Having beaten Riverside 3
nil earlier in the season and lead the game
twice this was 2 points dropped rather than a 1
point gained.
