Bare
Bones but 3 points
Southbank returned to action on Sunday against
Trentionians and also collected 3 points with a
well deserved performance. However, the day
could easily have been different as Hightower
was left with very few players to choose from,
with a number of absentees due to Easter
Commitments and other players letting him down.
At
kick-off Hightower had 10 players to start with
and discussed with his players the possibilities
of folding the fixture. However, credit to those
players, as each one said no lets play and
Hightower thanks them for there positive
attitude as the 3 points ultimately came the
Bank’s way. A late emergency call was made to
Andy Persaud and he obliged turning up, to make
the full quota with 15 minutes of the game gone.
Andy rolled back the years during the game, in
the central midfield berth and along with the
other 10 players was impressive throughout the
game.
From the
kick off Southbank dominated, with the midfield
of Mig, Andy and Ryan providing the platform for
this victory. Playing on early spring pitches
can always be tricky with the pitch hard and sun
shinning but this didn’t deter the team, as they
defended with a simplicity not seen for many
weeks and attacked with venom . Paul Towner
playing at right back for the first time with
the 1st team, Ollie Bradbury,
Fletcher along with Hightower kept things simple
and allowed the forward thinkers to take charge.
Several
opportunities came and went before Fletcher
overlapping down the left turned the fullback
inside out before delivering a pinpoint cross
onto the head of Mig to open the scoring for the
Bank. This was Mig’s first goal of the season in
what has been a difficult season following
injury in the early games lets hope this helps
Mig to a strong finish for the season, he
certainly deserves it following his efforts this
year.
Southbank snatched a second 10 minutes later
when the most bizarre own goal moment took
place. Benji raced through clear only to see his
shot saved by the goalkeeper, however the
rebound fall kindly for the Bank as the rebound
hit a Trentionians defender and bounced in. 2
nil and this is how it stayed until half time.
The Bank
stayed strong throughout the second half,
restricting Trentionians to half chances and
nothing more, in fact the Bank dominated even
more forcing a number of corners but just not
able to find the killer goal. Trentionians then
found their way back into the game with a
disputed penalty awarded against Bradbury for a
challenge hardly worth a mention. However, a
penalty it was but this was saved by the
excellent Jason, in goal on his return from
suspension because of an injury and Charlie’s
unavailability. However, again Trent’s goal was
a bizarre owngoal; the saved penalty was driven
back into the six yard box and somehow bounced
off Hightower’s heel and into the net. Jason
understandable was not a happy bunny,
considering the excellent save he had just made.
Southbank dug in from here and deservedly won
the game with a third goal, again the excellent
Benji was at the heart of things, racing onto
another through ball, before crossing the ball.
This cross bounced off the unfortunate Trent’s
defender and into the net for the game’s third
own goal.
Relief
and celebration for the Bank as the last 11
standing men in the club returned with 3 points.
Well done.
