Stutter at the end
Southbank closed out their 2006-2007 season
commitments with a result that summed up their
season and final 5th place finish for
the season. Despite the prospect of a 4th
place finish, disappearing several weeks back
the form of the recent games had been excellent
with 3 wins and a draw. However, they were
unable to sign off with a victory as they went
down 1-2 at Coley Park to a battling
Trentionians.
Coley
Park is without doubt been a major disaster for
the team this year with just 2 victories from
their 8 all season. Probably the fact that the
surface has been nothing but a joke since the
start of the season has not helped but the young
team have somehow played better away from home.
The probably reason for this is the fact that
many of the opposition pitches are wide and
expansive and this suits many of the players who
either have good engines or pass the ball
excellently. The search is on for 2007-2008 to
see if an alternative pitch can be secured
because as the results show Coley Park is not an
environment likely to help the club’s promotion
cause.
Again,
the hard pitch was better mastered by the
opposition and didn’t really allow for the team
to get into its stride apart from the first 20
minutes when there was no score on the board.
Trentionians scored first, a simple ball through
the centre of the defence found Olly and
Hightower slow to react and despite several
chances to clear, Trent found the net after
hitting the bar. Southbank reacted well to
equalise, top scorer Benji Williams securing his
position of top scorer with his 13 goal of the
season to bring them back level. However, Trent
secured all 3 points with the second and final
goal of the game 10 minutes before half-time.
The
second half bought nothing except a fine save by
Cook in goal as the game and the season
dissolved away under the baking hot April sun, a
season so rich in promise somehow slipped away
with the odd sloppy result but providing the 1st
squad sticks together hope springs eternal for
2007-2008
