Southbank went top of the league for the first time this season following this
2-0 victory over Burghfield Sports.Holton made only two enforced changes to
the starting line up as Ben Duncan and Mark Broomfield cam in for the
unavailable Hightower and Allan 'Steptoe' Kemp. Broomfield came in at left
midfield whilst Latchy moved from left back to centre back to fill Hightowers
boots. Budda was then switched to left back with Ben Duncan getting the nod on
the right.
In a pretty one sided affair Southbank were again in dominant mood - once
they'd woken up AGAIN! Latchy tried to create some excitment at the back with a
wayward backpass whilst Budda kicked out at an opponent in an uncharacteristic
display of petulance. Apart from this Southbank never looked in any trouble as
Spokes kept his second consecutive clean sheet for The 'Bank. Again the Blue
and White Hooped wall in front of him performed well, albeit under little
pressure, and JS was again reduced to fielding back passes and taking goal
kicks.
The 'Bank opened the scoring when Nader burst down the left, beat a couple
of Burghfield defenders and squared the ball to Gale 8 yards out. Gale tried to
take a touch before shooting but his first touch somehow ended up in the back
of the net, alongside a lunging Sports defender! Ricky later blamed his shin
pad and not his lack of a first touch....shouldn've know it wasn't The Generals
fault. The rest of the half saw Southbank play some good football although at
times a turn too many or pass to late showed up a tendancy to over complicate
things. However, chances were created and missed but comehow the score remained
1-0 despite Southbanks total control.
The second half saw Southbank continue to dominate preceedings. Brown was
controlling the midfield and pulling the strings whilst the back four, led by
the impressive Danny Fitzpatrick, proved impassable for the Sports attackers.
With half an hour to go Nader Gehawi was replaced by Steve Woodrow. This was
Nads' last appearance in the hoops before returning to Libya after completing
his time in England. Nads had again proved to be potent threat for Southbank
and his trickery and surging runs will be greatly missed. In Steve Woodrow
though Southbank have a ready made replacement, and Woody showed his worth with
another well taken goal shortly after coming on. A little work on his free
kicks wouldn't go amiss though after he almost knocked down a tree dehind the
goal with one second half effort.
Woodrows goal proved to be the last as Southbank settled for a 2-0 win.
Although this was a satifying performance, Southbank will have to be more
ruthless in front of goal against the stronger teams this year. However, if the
whole team continue to defend as well as in recent weeks points will continue
to flood in as a the new found resiliance is rewarded with a much improved
defencive record.
