Southbank took a break from league action for this
Industrial Cup first round tie versus Division 1 East side AFC Woodley.
Player/Manager Holton made just one change to the
side from last week as Steve Woodrow replaced Nader Gehawi after his return to
Libya. The bench was strengthened by the return of Allan Kemp and Bryce
Bellman who joined Hyslop and Holton on the sidelines.
With the wind picking up and the pitch still rock
hard it was difficult for both sides to play any decent football. The first
twenty minutes was a scrappy affair in which neither side managed to take
control or create any dangerous openings. With Woodley perhaps marginally on
top it was left to a moment of magic from Woodrow to open the scoring. A ball
over the top allowed Steve to use his pace to meet the ball and hit a dipping
volley over the head of the Woodley keeper from twenty-five yards. A classic
Woodrow strike and a fine way to mark his return to the starting line-up.
For the remainder of the first half clear cut
chances where at a premium as both defences remained on top. Woodley proved
hard to break down as their deep lying centre midfielder dominated the first
half by winning all the headers and distributing well. Browner and Towner
really had their work cut out but Brown was at the heart of most of Southbanks
good
football as his quick footwork and tricky looked
the most potent danger for The 'Bank. When he wasn't getting the hump about
taking corners this was possibly Browns best game of the season so far. It was
from a Brown/Woodrow combination on a corner that Southbank nicked a second
goal. A short corner from Brown to Woodrow was then crossed to the far post and
alluded the suspect Woodley keeper. It fell to a Woodley player on the goaline,
and with Blue and White hoops surrounding him, it was all the unfortunate
defender could do to put the ball in to his own net! With the security of the
second goal Southbank got a hold of the game. The hard working Broomfield and
Thurgood got more in possession and both looked a threat going forward as half
time approached.
During the interval Holton asked for a repeat
performance from his side with a continued display of work rate and
commitment. His troops delivered as Woodley were reduced to long range efforts
and corners whilst Southbank opened Woodley up more and more as the game wore
on. With Woodley pushing for a way back in to the game Holton sent on Bellman
for the impressive Broomfield. Broomie had once again worked his socks off
down the left hand side and has given Holton another option in midfield with
his sterling performances over the last two games. With the game opening up a
little Ricky Gale was sent one-on-one with the keeper. As he tried to round
the keeper he was bought down for a penalty which saw the keeper
sympathetically booked. Gale dusted himself down and took the penalty
himself. However, the keeper, who was lucky to still be on the pitch, guessed
the right way and stopped the Generals spot kick. Thankfully Bryce was on hand
to bundle the ball over the line for his second goal of the season. The goal
made up for Bryce's earlier miss when his team mates were queuing up in the box
and, with the keeper beaten, he completely missed the ball and fell over his
own bandy legs! The trick was repeated by Gale as he fell in the box
attempting to get on the end of a right wing cross. Questions must be aimed at
their pre-match preparations as both seemed to be suffering from less than
perfect balance.
With a 3-0 lead Southbank now concerned themselves
with keeping a third consecutive clean sheet. The biggest danger to Spokes'
goal seemed to come from corners. Woodley were a big side and coupled with
good delivery they were always a threat to a Southbank defence missing
Hightowers aerial ability. Holton threw on Kemp and Hyslop to help shore
things up and it looked like it had worked until it all went wrong in last
minute as a long range effort bounced up in front of Spokes. Spokes managed to
clear the danger, albeit only for a corner. The Woodley pressure told and the
ball dropped in the box and was slammed home through a crowd of players as
Woodley scored with almost the last kick of the game.
The win, which marked the first outing of The
'Banks new kit - kindly sponsored by Elite Wheels & Tyres - puts Southbank in
to Round 2 of the cup, a tie against Calcot CA, and just 3 wins from a first
ever Southbank cup final appearance!
