Following the previous weeks victory against the same
opposition this was an ideal opportunity for Southbank to record
their second win of the season. With Southbank hit by an
availability crisis - Bradbury, Madden, Brown and Rodgers all
unavailable - it was a patched up Southbank team that started the
game.
With 4 changes to last weeks back four it took a while
for Southbank to settle into the game as a disjointed 20 opening
twenty minutes saw some dire football from both sides.
However, as in the first game between the sides, Pangbourne managed
to take the lead when a long throw caused confusion in the Southbank
back four and a Pangbourne shot flew past a helpless Spokes.
Somehow this seemed to settle Southbank down and some neat passing
started to get The Bank back into the game. A deserved
equaliser came when Towner played Allan Kemp in down the left.
Allan beat two Pangbourne defenders and slotted past the keeper to
spark Southbank into life.
Despite the loss of Steve Patterson, which saw Guppy come
on to play left wing with Allan (controversially if you ask Towner?)
switching to the centre, Southbank roared into the lead with a goal
of the season contender from Ricky Gale. Gale cut in from the
inside right channel, beat two defenders then coolly fired in to the
top corner with his left foot. Some resolute defending held
the lead to half time and a chance for the patched up Southbank side
to take a breather.
The second half saw some prolonged pressure on the
Southbank back four as Pangbourne made the strange tactic of going
for an arial bombardment. What made this strange was that
Southbank, with new signing Simon Price, first team debutant Danny
Fitzpatrick and an out of position Bryce Bellman, where more than
dominant in the air against what was at most an average height
Pangboure forward line. If ever the back four was breeched
Spokes came to the rescue in what was perhaps his most accomplished
performance for Southbank. The highlight of Spokes performance
was a full stretch finger tip save that pushed a certain goal bound
shot on to the cross bar.
With tension growing under the Pangbourne pressure Towner
claimed his second assist when he released Gale for a 1-on-1 with
the keeper. Despite having missed a couple of earlier chances
The General - back to his commanding best - sat the keeper down and
passed in to the empty net to seal the win and claim 3 more points
to almost secure Southbanks Division 1 status.
This was well earned victory with fine performances from
keeper Spokes, Towner and Gale and tireless display from defender
Allan Kemp who scored scored in his second successive game.
Also worthy of note were steadying performances at the back from
Fitzpatrick and new signing Simon Price.
