Southbank FC Match Report

  Date : Sunday 27th April 2003
  Venue : Coley Park
  Result : Southbank 3 County Arms 0
  Scorers :

Southbanks last game of the 2002-03 season saw them face a stubborn County Arms side who played the full 90 minutes with just 9 men.

With the numerical advantage Southbank should have ended the season with a hatful of goals but some resolute defending from County Arms, combined with a lacklustre Southbank performance saw the season end with a 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Mark Holton, Lee Didcock and Paul Towner.

All credit should go to County who came with a game plan to keep the score down and defended with 9 men behind the ball all game. They allowed the Southbank defence and midfield all the time they wanted on the ball and held a tight back line that refused to give away chances.  The inevitable opening goal came from a sweeping move down the right which saw Paul Towner prod home a scuffed effort from 8 yards for his maiden first team goal.  It was hoped this would open the flood gates but it remained 1-0 until half time.

At half time manager Derrick Holton, in his last game as Southbank manager, withdrew both Steve's, Brown and skipper Booth, to introduce Price and Broomfield.  At this point Brown, who had already been warned by the ref for his petulant onfield behaviour, lost control and went in to a big girly strop.  The toys were well and truely ejected from the pram and Brown stormed off to wherever he comes from.

This didn't disrupt those still on the pitch too much as a change in shape saw some more fluid attacking play.

Holton scored yet another goal with his head, a nicely weighted flick over the keeper from another cross from the right before Didcock added his 5th goal in 5 games to complete the scoring.

All in all a disappointing end to a disappointing season which has seen manager Derrick Holton take charge of his final Southbank game.  After years of living the dream Holton has decided to call time on his tenure and hand the reigns over to a new man.  It will take a lot to fill Derricks shoes as his record speaks for itself and his unquestioned committment has meant he's not missed a first team fixture in the 6 season since Southbank started.
