Southbank produced a stuttering
performance against lowly Victoria Park in this Berks and Bucks cup fixture
but despite missing a first half penalty moved comfortably through to the
next round.
Southbank went
1-0 up after Miguel Frade
nodded home from a Ben Neo corner and then soon found themselves 2-0
up when Tony Nolan acrobatically volleyed in a looping ball.
After some concerted Southbank pressure
Steve Mahoney forced former Southbank keeper Jay Gibbs into an excellent
diving save with a rocket of a shot before Victoria Park broke away down
the left wing. The Victoria forward rode two challenges and shot home
from a tight angle to peg The 'Bank back to
2-1.
Steve then sent Raph Allen through on goal
and he was crudely hauled down by the Gibbs for a penalty. Up stepped
Harvey for the spot kick but the Victoria keeper made amends and Harv's
effort was well saved.
VP lumped the ball downfield and poor
defending from the ensuing corner allowed a headed equaliser to make it
2-2.
Southbank were now unable to get their
usual passing game going san Victoria enjoyed their own spell of pressure
on the Southbank defence. Southbank withstood a barrage of long balls
before a move down the left hand side left Steve Mahoney to place the ball
into the bottom right hand corner to make it
3-2 as the teams went in at
halftime.
The second half again proved to be a
disappointing start but with Dan Djakovic coming on for Scouse and Chris
Sigsworth replacing Mig, Southbank began to give themselves more width and
get balls into the box.
Unfortunately poor marking left a Victoria
player unmarked 4 yards out and he tapped the ball past Harvey for
3-3 in this ding dong cup tie.
Chris Sigsworth then volleyed just wide
from a Persuad cross as Southbank began to exert themselves onto the game
and young Raph began to run the defenders ragged. Eventually one of them
lost his patience and barged him over in the penalty area and the referee
had no choice but to award a second spotkick.
Undeterred by his previous miss, Harvey
coolly slotted home this time to make it
4-3 with just fifteen minutes to go. Despite a few minor
defensive scares, the 'Bank saw out the remainder of the game minutes to
make it through to the next round.
