Southbank FC Match Report

  Date : Sunday 8th December 2002
  Venue : Kings Meadow
  Result : Autocare 2 Southbank Res 3
  Scorers : Everest 3

After 5 weeks of postponements this cup clash finally took place on an extremely heavy Kings Meadow pitch.

Southbank started strongly and should already have been in front before the 15th minute when Steve Woodrow's deep corner was met by a weak looping header from 14 yards by Malcolm Everest.  The huge keeper should really have claimed the ball but he just succeeded in tipping the ball onto the underside of the bar and in.

Southbank were dominating at this stage and continued to do so with Paul Towner spurning a couple of good chances before disappearing at half time for his Sunday roast.  Towners disappearance saw the debut of 15 year old Charlie Cook, Guppy's cousin, and he went on to get through more running in his first 45 minutes than Guppy has got through in his last 45 games.  16 year old Karl Lobato moved from right midfield to the centre of the park and his hard work and excellent running with the ball caused problems for Autocare.

Southbank deservedly went 2 up just before the hour mark when another excellent corner from Steve Woodrow found Everest unmarked to power home his second of the game.  Southbank were very comfortable at this stage and still looked the more likely side to score again.....until Harvey and Tom thought they'd liven up Glover's 100th Southbank appearance with some Keystone Cop defending to gift Autocare a lifeline.  2 minutes later came the equaliser after the weak referee over-ruled an offside flag and Southbank looked like falling apart.

However, Southbank showed a lot of character and heads didn't drop.  They once again went on the attack and relentless pressure was rewarded with 10 minutes to go.  Another corner from Woodrow, this time possibly his worst of the day, squirmed it's way through a crowded box to Everest who drilled a low shot goalwards.  The ball squirmed through many bodies and eventually squeezed into the net.

There was some debate as to whether Graeme Storey got the last touch from one inch out but the CCTV footage from Tesco car park proved inconclusive and the left winger generously credited the hatrick goal to his player manager to ensure a starting spot next week.
