After a disappointing result in week one, the Southbank management duo
of Marc Osbourne and Gary Purser were looking to make amends in this fixture
and kick-start the season by scoring a few goals. Unfortunately the build up to
the game was marred by injuries to key players as unfortunately Neil Hankinson
and Steve Woodrow both failed late fitness tests.
To get over the loss of these two key players Karl Lobato was pushed up
front with Malcolm, in an effort to inject some pace into the forward line, and
this meant a first start for John Pugh wide on the right. Dave Rogers filled
the void at centre back.
Southbank came out trying to get their passing game going on a testing pitch
and enjoyed the better opening stages. Despite this Mapledurham took the
lead when they scored with a free header from a corner that was whipped into
the centre of the 18 yard box.
This prompted The 'Bank to push forward but after a few sporadic attacks and
corners they proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot. A wasted corner
led to a Mapledurham goal kick which was pumped up field, a quick flick on, a
short sprint and a lob of over the stranded Jim put Mapledurham 2 clear and
meant Southbank had an uphill task for the remainder of the game.
Southbank then struggled with their touch for the remainder of the half and,
worryingly, started to whinge and moan at each other. Malcolm and Karl were
feeding of scraps and trying their hardest to forge an opening, but things just
weren't going Southbanks way. The best effort they could muster came when
Malc won a free kick about 25 yards out. Up stepped Player/Manager Oz but
he failed to make a clean strike and his weak effort went under the wall and
straight down the keepers throat.
The second half saw two changes, with Guppy making way for Charlie Cook, and
Pugh making way for Russell Simove. This seemed to kick start Southbank in to
life and they started off a great deal better with the youngsters Charlie and
Karl causing problems on the right hand side. The midfield was working hard to
try and cover the ground between defence and attack but The 'Bank soon resorted
to an unfamiliar long ball game. Southbank huffed and puffed and
eventually got a brake through. Oz took a short corner to Charlie who
then whipped in a cross for Tappern to swoop with a great header. This left a
good 20 minutes to find the equaliser but It just wouldn't come. Malcolm had a
couple of chances and generally played but couldn't get the goal his
performance deserved. Meanwhile at the other end Jim made two outstanding saves
to keep the hoops in the hunt.
It was a better all round performance in the second half but that first
league point is yet to claimed!
