After a late pitch inspection this
game went ahead to the delight of the capacity
crowd of approximately 10. Southbank fielded
a strong side with the only players unavailable
for selection being Mike Tappern and John
Pugh. Southbank started the game playing
down the slope in the first half and seemed in
control for the most part but good possession
seemed to break down too frequently in the final
third. However, Southbank did break the
deadlock midway through the half when a rasping
drive from Steve Woodrow was diverted into his own
net by the Buses' keeper. He then feigned
injury for 5 minutes to try to spare his
blushes!
Southbank continued on top but the
second goal proved elusive. Steve Woodrow
again went close and Graeme Storey should have
done better when left in acres of space on the
edge of the Buses' penalty area. Unbelievably the
referee turned down all appeals that the keeper
couldn't pick the ball up because it was a
backpass.
Then, on the stroke of half time,
the referee awarded a controversial penalty for
handball from a corner. The ball seemed to
strike Ben Neo on the chest as the muddy mark from
the ball seemed to support. However, the
referee insisted it was handball and Buses
converted the chance to go into half time all
square.
At half time there were a few doubts
that we could win the game as we were playing
against the slope in the second half. These
doubts were relieved almost immediately in the
second half when Malcolm Everest broke clear. The
goalkeeper made a good save from the initial shot
and pushed the ball wide but Everest got to the
rebound first and slotted home from a tight
angle.
Within minutes 2-1 became 3-1 when
Steve Woodrow gave us a taste of things to
come. He beat the offside trap and coolly
slotted home a one on one with the keeper for his
second goal of the game. Woodrow then added
2 more as Southbank completely dominated the game
and broke clear with embarrassing ease. The
highlight came when Woodrow sat the Buses' keeper
on his backside before slotting into the bottom
corner. As it turned out, the conditions
were much more favourable for the Southbank
forwards shooting uphill in the second half as the
ball held up better and the pitch wasn't like
quicksand!
After notching his fourth Woodrow
was replaced by Colin Charles who had time to make
2 memorable contributions. Within seconds of
being on the pitch he injured the keeper when
chasing a through ball. And then in the
dying moments he was put clear down the right and
only had to centre for Everest to score.
Colin shaped to cross, the crowd's anticipation
rose and this was followed by roars of laughter as
his 'cross' went off at a right angle from his
foot for a goal kick!
Neil Hankinson could have
added to the scoreline when racing clear, knocking
the ball past the keeper and putting the ball
straight into touch. Charlie Cook also went close
and had one goal disallowed in an impressive
substitute appearance for the hung over Karl
Lobato. And special mention has to go to
debutant Danny Fitzpatrick who covered well when
Dave Guppy went wandering up the pitch.
A good second half performance bodes
well for the second half of the season.
Bring it on!
