Southbank FC Club History

Southbank Football Club was formed in 1997 by Malcolm Everest, Steve Fullbrook and Mark "Mr Southbank" Holton.  Below is a plotted history of the rise of Southbank from those early days.

1997-98  - Mark, Malcolm & Steve first plan to enter a team into the Reading & District Sunday League.  After much deliberation the name Southbank was decided upon as a way of forever capturing the spirit of their early years together watching Reading FC from the soon to be demolished Southbank at Elm Park.  With the help of Derrick Holton (Marks dad and future first team manager) the three visionaries managed to get the team accepted into Division 4 West for the 1997-98 season and went about about assembling a team.  On September 14th 1997 Prospect Park witnessed Southbank's first competitive game, a comfortable 3-0 victory over Misfits with goals coming from Mark Holton (pen), Colin O'Neil and Ricky Gale.  The team, managed by Steve Holloway, for that historic first game was:

Bruce Auger, Oggie Holloway, Steve Fullbrook, Gary Winchester, Bryce Bellman, Ricky Gale, Steve Booth, Kristian Warner, Colin O'Neil (Nick Kent), Mark Holton, Malcolm Everest (David Guppy).

That first season saw Southbank, playing at their first home of Linier Park, Calcot, bag their first silverware as they romped home to win the league by 3 points over Richfield Rovers Res.  Unfortunately Steve Holloway's reign as manager was short lived as work and family commitments meant he could only take charge for the first month of the season.  He was replaced by Mick Tuckwell who began his first spell with the club in October.  Players Player of the Year was Bryce Bellman, Managers Player of the Year was Gary Winchester, and Most Improved Player was Tom Glover.  Top Scorer was Mark Holton with 32 goals.  The overall record for the season was:

P27  W20  D3  L4   F103  A34

1998-99 - Following the gloriously successful first season it was decided to set up a Reserve team to satisfy The Bank's thirst for football.  With Gary Purser joining as Reserve Team Manager the side were entered into the Trophy Factory UK League (Tilehurst Friendly League). A number of new signings came to The Bank to provide the strength in-depth needed to sustain a two pronged push for honours.  The new squad didn't disappoint either as both sides had successful seasons.

The First Team managed to win Division Three West by a massive 20 points although yet again failing to make a real impression in the cup competitions.  Driven on by Players Player of the Year Bryce Bellman and Managers Player of the Year Martin Oxley Southbank managed to win 20 of their 25 games ending with an overall record of:

P25 W20 D0 L4 F67 A22

Goalkeeper Jim Thirlaway also celebrated a fine season as he set a club record of 9 clean sheets and went 360 minutes without conceding a goal.  Top scorer was again Mark Holton who also picked up Most Improved Player of Year.

Meanwhile the Reserves just missed out on a league and cup double when they lost in the Cup semi-final and finished runners up in the league (despite not completing their fixtures as the Leagues administrators ended the season in farcical fashion).  Outstanding for the stiffs where Ian Hudson and Dave Rodgers who won Players Player and Managers Player of the Year respectively and both then stepped up to become integral parts of the first team.  Top goalscorer was Malcolm Everest (who equaled Bruce Auger's 5 hatricks in a season) whilst Tom Glover won his second successive Most Improved Player of the Year award!  The reserves shortened season saw then fall one goal short of the magic 100 mark as they 'finished'  the season with a record of:

P21 W16 D1 L4 F99 A42
